Primary Backing Fabric is a specific fabric developed for rug tufting. Also known as ‘primary tufting cloth’ this material is the essential base to all tufting projects. Tuftbox’s primary fabric is made from woven polyester, the composition most commonly used by the hand-tufting industry worldwide. Why is it the #1 choice for professionals? Polyester is stronger than cotton and better able to withstand the pressure of the tufting machine. Polyester is also not affected by humidity whereas cotton-based or cotton blend primary tufting fabrics absorb moisture and can become loose on the tufting frame with just a slight change of humidity. You can learn more about primary fabrics in our Tufting Fabric FAQs.
